Lesson 40:Food and talk
First listen and then answer the question.
Was Mrs. Rumbold a good companion at dinner?
Last week at a dinner party, the hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs. Rumbold. Mrs. Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.
'A new play is coming to "The Globe" soon,' I said. 'Will you be seeing it?'
'No,' she answered.
'Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year?' I asked.
'No,' she answered.
'Will you be staying in England?' I asked.
'No,' she answered.
In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.
'Young man,' she answered, 'if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner!"

1. tight
adj.
You have been wearing those tight shoes for years.
I’m sorry, I’m afraid I can’t visit your place, for I have a very tight schedule.
adv.
Hold me tight.
The new cop held the gun very tight.
I’ve lost my job so I have to tighten my belt to make ends meet.
Dan has fixed the IKEA shelf on the wall.
Why are you always fixing your eyes on me?
Would you please fix your attention on your study?
Let’s fix a time for the group meeting.
My watch has stopped. It needs fixing.
I am trying to fix the dinner for the guests.
3. despair
During the war, the soldiers despaired of coming back home.
Haven’t you despaired of his wait?鄄and?鄄see attitude?
n. 失望
We went back all the way in despair after the football match.
★可与despair搭配的动词有: fall into despair = sink into despair = get into despair
课文中的最后一句是: “If you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner.”
If I were a little bird, I could fly out of here.
If he had enough money, he wouldn’t drop out.
could能力, 可能 / should义务, 责任 / would意志, 决心 / might推想
1. The hostess asked me to sit next to Mrs. Rumbold.
next to, beside, at, by, close to, near, next?
The man next to me was talking loudly.
They used to live next door to the prison.
They are standing at the window.
They sang songs by the campfire.
How near is the subway station to here?
Is there a booth nearby?
2. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating.
“be busy (in) + 动名词”, 意思是“忙于做某事”, 也可以用“be busy with + 名/代” 来表达, 更简洁。
She’s busy striking a pose in front of a wall of newsmen.
The lawyer is busy filing a lawsuit against the company.
She’s busy with her homework.
The lawyer is busy with a case.
3. “A new play is coming to ‘The Globe’ soon,” I said. “Will you be seeing it?”
