备战日记第五回——死灰复燃

回来学习了，谢谢大家的关心，也请继续帮助我吧。

2008-7-31

一. 首先听写了一篇3月1号的CNN新闻，好久不听写了。连软件在重装系统后都不在了，于是重新下载了sitman,又下了一个以前没用过的draft听写对比软件，这样更便于发现自己的问题。半句一停，大概三遍后才能听写完。有的难的地方甚至是两三个词一停，老师说的一两句一停好难做到啊。是短期记忆的问题还是听力的问题呢？明天争取要抑制住听见一两个词就按下暂停键的冲动。

其中的生词：
1. quarantine (n,v) 隔离； in quarantine;
2. drudge (n) 苦力；          drudgery (n) 苦差事

二. 之后是一篇BBC, 关于俄罗斯能源巨头声称乌克兰将切断欧洲天然气供应，乌总统出面辟谣。
生词有：

2. reckless  (adj) 不计后果的

三.《economist》音频。从今天开始听的是2008年1月26号~2月2号的那期。
鉴于这家伙的长度和难度，听写就免了。处理方式基本是听两遍再跟读一遍。之后阅读原文，仔仔细细，一句一句的读，记下生词，如有必要，记下精彩的表达方式。然后再抛开原文听一遍，最后饱含深情，仿佛我就是那评论员，再读一遍，给自己录个音，听听像不像那么回事。
今天这篇是leaders部分的第一篇，the markets。
概述:  The financial cirsis in the US is spreading fast from property market, bond market... even to the stockmarket. However, the react of Fed which is spooked apparently is not appropriate. The cut of three quarters of the percentage point of the interest rates was immediately aborbed by the market. Why there are so many people over-optimistic about the us economy before the turmoil turned into a disaster? Because of the three assumptions: 1. Fed won't let US go to recession. 2. Even if the US went into recession, other economies are still growing well. 3. The effect of the crisis which started from the asset market would be confined within the asset market.of course, they are all wrong.
However, there are also bright aspects. The cut of interest rate would lower transaction costs, improve consumer's cash flow. In short, the author is optimistic about the role the fed would play in the future and the us economy.
这篇文章的点蛮多的，现在全凭回忆总结起来有点难度，肯定是不全面的，但是刚刚读完就总结的话我又怕忍不住就去复述文章了。

实务进行了一篇英译汉（一个外国市长感谢上海市长的招待的讲话。）
里面这个老外貌似引用了一句我国唐朝诗人的诗句，大意为真正的友谊不会被距离阻挡。实在是想不出来啊，哪位坛友告诉我吧，要不就只能等过几天把我的地图书要回来再查了。
好久不练笔记了，跟不上趟啊，常用的一些符号也忘的差不多了。
然后一篇是对芮效俭大使等人的致辞。核心是中美贸易摩擦。其中有一句“降低对侵权行为的行政处罚门槛”，我翻成“enlarge the scope of administrative punishment against the infringement." 不知道对不对？
还有一个“午餐会”不知怎么说，在网上查的是“luncheon".

“中美商贸联合会”怎么说呢？

第六回

2008-8-1

今天胃痛，只听写了CNN和一篇BBC，其它的都没有做。
生词有：

今天把我的地图书要回来了。（活该考试没过，自己都没看还借给别人！）
查到了昨天那个“中美商贸联委会” 是译作： US-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade.
还有老外卖弄文采，来了句所谓唐朝诗人的“long distance separates no bosom friends," 
原来是“海内存知己，天涯若比邻”啊！

还是那篇，“我们已经降低了对侵犯知识产权的刑事处罚门槛”， 我昨天翻的是“enlarge the scope of administrative punishment against the infringement."  暂且不论这个说法对不对，首先笔记明显漏掉了“知识产权”和“刑事”。梅德明老师是这样翻的：“We have lowered the threshold for criminal penalties against IPR infringement."   这句还可以怎么翻呢？希望有看到我日记的坛友和老师帮忙提供多些版本啊！

有书在手，感觉有利有弊。好处是碰到不会的可以快一点查出来，省的到处找。不好的是不太相信自己了，老想去翻书。怎么样才能达到一个平衡？——既充分利用了这本书，又不要太依赖它？

以前好像也是在真经下载的一个口译词汇手册，里面对时下热点词汇的总结挺全面的，感觉很不错却没时间看。打算从明天开始每天背一背。

现在胃还在隐隐作痛，给你喝点药，明天别再给我惹事了行吗？睡觉前还想把《卢旺达饭店》看完，如果你允许的话。

备战日记第七回

2008-8-2

旧闻听写，朗读：
3.03 CNN，BBC 3段（斯里兰卡人道主义调查中止，中国将放缓经济增速，布什出台刺激经济一揽子计划）

CNN的听写一般放在早晨刚起床，此时精力充沛经得起它的折磨。

要点：
1. underdog        
n    居于下风者；

2. garner              
n    to collect or obtain a large amount of sth useful or important. 
（这个词在新闻上很常见）

3. face-off           
n     对峙，敌对；（冰球比赛等）开球；

4. facelift            
n     除皱术；外表更新       
 （此段新闻中用于描述一座修缮一新的酒店。）

5. around the corner         
*not far away;
*coming very soon;

6. 表达“压倒性的领先”，
新闻中用——"a commanding lead over..."

7. be right on the money-------
不太正式的表达，有此在电视上看到的，今天突然想起，就记下来吧。
*  to be exactly right;          
 eg: Her guess was right on the money.

今天的《economist》还是Jan. 26th的，这篇文章我希望大家有机会碰到就赶紧躲开。题目是《Northern Rock——Hocking the Rock》。（northern rock，北岩银行，是英国一家大银行，靠拆借在房贷领域叱诧风云，最终被次贷危机拉下水，需政府出面相救才免遭破产厄运。）
照例听了两遍，单词每个都听的真真切切，跟读也能跟的大致清清楚楚，然而，三遍过后，对文章的意思完全摸不着头脑。相当受打击啊！胃也不疼了啊？难道脑袋又跟我较上劲了？
凄凉地打开原文，才发现别说听，连读下去都很困难。这本杂志里的文章只要一提到他们的布朗首相总是没好气的，极尽讽刺之能事，加上银行金融方面的背景知识涉及较多，难怪我要头大了。
为了证明，向大家贡献文中一个令人眼花缭乱的长句，（您先深吸一口气。。。）

是不是对我顿生恻隐之心啊？没？那再来一个：
The taxpayer will guarantee repayment of the money Northern Rock borrows to repay the taxpayer.
像不像绕口令？这句我是死活没搞懂啥意思，望高人指点。。。

令我吃惊的是，foot还有当冤大头付账的意思！

实务今天做完了“商务谈判”单元，因为是对话的翻译，我就没做笔记，听一句说一句。

几个没有表达出来的点：
1. floor space   建筑面积
2. metallurgy    冶金
3. counter-offer   还盘
4. dislocation     错位

以上几个对比的点，我认为是比较重要的，除了“单价”是我胡扯外，其它三个好像我说的也没错，不过是感

觉别扭了点。还是按书上的来。

还有两个表达值得一提：
1. “我们不可能出那样低的报价”
我说的是“we can't offer such a low price."
书上是："we can't go as far as that."（——感觉好多了！）
或者  we can't go that far. 
明显后两个更地道。

2. “不在一个档次”
好像很熟，却一时说不出口。只好说成“not with the same standards”.
书上曰：“not in the same class".

最后读了三篇2008-02-03《Beijing Review》里的文章。因为李元老师说过这个对汉译英很有帮助。
词汇：
1. homebound                         回家途中的
2. sumptuous          adj            奢侈的，华丽的
eg:  a sumptuous feast/banquet/dinner
3. undaunted           adj            无畏的
4. culinary                adj            烹饪的
5. longevity    

两个表达：
weather-stranded;   disaster-relief    (adj)  

汉译英中这样的表达可以化从句为单词, 要记住运用。

今天没有练实务，CNN和BBC中的生词：（日记沦为生词簿？我也不想这样。。。）

n. 一级防范禁闭；

2. up for grabs

n. if sth is up for grabs, it is availible and many people are trying to get it or win it. ——这是麦克米伦的解释，金山2007上解释为很容易到手，也就是“唾手可得”吧。

3. come off

vi. to achieve a particular result in an activity, especially a competition or fight.

come off well/badly/best/worst

新闻中是"coming off 11 straight state victories." 但是词典上说这个短语是不及物的啊？？？

4. under way     adv

    underway      adj        进行中的

5. foreclosure

n.v.   丧失抵押品赎回权；

6. repercussion

多为复数形式

a bad effect that sth has, usually lasting for a long time.

这篇比昨天那个好懂多了，读起来也更有趣些。讲的是太空旅行私营化。
我的概述：Nowadays, you don't have to be a fit, healthy young man who has received specialist training to get on a space craft, as long as you have thousands of dollars to burn, the dream of going to the space may come ture. Private space-travelling has begun to emerge, but NASA and the state aviation departments in Britain have fell behind in this journey for their bureaucratic characteristic. Instead, the leading power in this field is some famous private firms, with Virgin as the most well-known one, which has its own spacecrafts and launchers. There is a potential market, all they need to do is to enlarge the scope of business and destinations in order to bring down the costs, so that the trip will be more affordable to more people. Another huge market is the launch of satellite. In the near future, cities, universities, firms even individuals could have their own satellites.

这篇里有几个句子值得学习，我抄了下来并翻译了一下，命名为“佳句有约”：希望各位老师和同学对我的翻译有不同意见，多多指教（如果奇迹般地看到了我的日记的话。）

我的翻译：

3. Many people date the emergence of the enviromental movement to the publication of a photograph taken from Appollo 8 of the earth rising over the lunar horizon.

我的翻译：
很多人认为，正是阿波罗8号拍摄的“从月球看地球”照片引发了环保运动的兴起。

实务开始了最让我头痛的“旅游”单元，那些地名和华丽诗意的描写太让人犯晕了。地名没办法，只能一个一个背，至于描写，我一律按感情色彩归为“褒”“贬”两类，进行简单描述。也就是杨Sir说的yes and no 吧，该扔就扔。虽然译文完全失去了原文的排场和文采，没办法，谁叫咱是口译呢？而且是刚上路的口译。
做了一个汉译英（泰山）和一个英译汉（澳大利亚）
需要记住的词汇如下：

1. 五岳: the 5 great/famous/etc mountains in China;

2. 兵马俑: Terra-cotta Warriors;

3. 险峰: perilous peak;

4. 曲折的: tortuous, zigzag;

5. 形容山的“峻拔，突兀”， 好像只有precipitous 可用，还有别的吗？ 望赐教！！！

6. 亭阁: parvilion

7. 塔： pagoda （中国的塔多为佛教建筑，因此貌似pagoda比tower更贴切，在此文中。）

8. 题字，碑铭： inscription

9. 重峦叠嶂： peaks rising one after another;

10. 阴天：overcast  （这里说gloomy 或 cloudy 都不好，好像只有这个可选？）

11. 吉祥的：auspicious,   propitious

12. 祭祀天地： offer/perform sacrifices to Heaven and Earth;

二。 《economist》: Sebia's future--No place else to go

这篇讲塞尔维亚的政治别扭。围绕科索沃独立和亲欧盟还是亲俄展开。

我的概述：While its neighbours have tried their best to get into the EU,  Sebia is turning its back on it and would be prone to Russia which is definitely blocking the independence of Kosovo. However, according to the author, Russia just want to buy up Sebia's energy resources on the cheap. So, for Sebia's own good, it should be keeping in with EU, which can bring it market access, economic development and other conveniences.

三。实务——终于结束了‘旅游’单元。

通过这个单元学会了“舍不得孩子套不着狼”。 听录音一个劲的忽悠“人间仙境”，“巧夺天工”，“令人叹为观止”“绚丽多姿”等等（此处省略三四十个修饰词。。。），记都来不及记。我一律归结为一个字——“美”，准备几个“美”的说法，beautiful, splendid,gorgeous, wonderful, amazing 什么的，碰到了就往出扔啦。虽然听上去糙了点，但求不出大错。口译的重点毕竟不在景物描写吧。
