Bush signs bill for .kids.us domain

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 – Kids have their own space at fast food restaurants, malls and even some grocery stores. Today President Bush signed a bill into law that gives kids their own area in the vast and sometimes dangerous world of the Internet. In one year or less as part of the .US country domain, websites that qualify as safe for kids will have a .kids.us address.
PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNED the Dot Kids Implementation and Efficiency Act Wednesday morning at the White House. Present at the ceremony were congressional leaders from both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate who sponsored the bill.
“The bill is a wise and necessary step to safeguard our children while they use computers and discover the great possibilities of the Internet. Every site designated .kids.us will be a safe zone for children. The sites will be monitored for content, for safety, and all objectionable material will be removed,” Bush said.
Online chat rooms and instant messaging will not be allowed unless they can be certified as safe. In addition, websites using the new domain will not connect a child to online sites outside the child friendly zone.
The .US domain, often referred to as America’s Internet address, was established in 1985 as a top-level country code for the United States. On April 24, 2002, it was expanded to a second level so that companies, government entities, and people could use the domain. Dot Kids will be part of the .US domain.
“We must give our parents the peace of mind knowing their children are learning in safety. This act of Congress helps us meet these goals,” Bush concluded.
